On June 21, on the longest day of the year, United Way's around the world host a volunteer Day of Action to address a variety of challenges. Locally, United Way of 1000 Lakes has partnered with Itasca County Habitat for Humanity and the Itasca County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) to help residents in the Oakland Addition care and maintain their homes. 

Projects can include:

  • Yard: leaf-raking, landscaping, gardening, pruning
  • Exterior: window washing, painting, installing ramps and grab bars
  • Minor Repairs: steps, doors, windows, roof 
  • General Clean-up: dispose of items such as garbage, mattresses, old appliances and electronics

If you are an Oakland Addition resident who is interested in being a project recipient for the 2019 Day of Action, please register or call 218-999-7570.

Deadline to register to receive services is Friday, June 14.

Do you or someone you know need help with a project at home? Complete the registration to request assistance. Once your registration is received, you will be contacted to determine your eligibility for volunteering, funding, and loan program assistance.

Home Repair Programs


Small Cities Development Program (SCDP) 

The City of Grand Rapids was awarded the Small Cities Development Program (SCDP) funding from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. These funds are to provide deferred loans for residential rehabilitation projects. Project examples include energy efficient modifications, faucets, lighting, and smoke detectors. The Itasca County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (ICHRA) is overseeing the selection process.

Home Preservation Program

Habitat for Humanity's Home Preservation Program works with homeowners who need assistance with interior and exterior repairs to help maintain their home.  Project examples include painting, landscaping, minor interior, and exterior maintenance. Each project is unique to the homeowners situation and may include low to zero interest loans and sweat equity hours contributed by the owner.

Day of Action Program

United Way recruits and organizes a volunteer workforce comprised of all skill levels and ages to help with a varity of outside projects. Crews help with tasks such as painting, landscaping, clean-up, power washing, and more.
