United Way of 1000 Lakes formed in 1963 and serves all of Itasca County, as well as portions of Aitkin and Cass counties and the Leech Lake Reservation. The organization’s mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities in the Itasca area. Its goal is to create long-lasting change by researching, identifying, reporting on, and responding to the area’s most pressing social issues.
While we live in an area known for its beautiful and abundant lakes and forests; our neighbors desperately need things as basic as food, clothing and shelter. Unemployment is chronically higher than the state average, median incomes do not meet costs of living, housing vacancy is low, and geographical distances are wide. In addition, rates of domestic violence, teen pregnancy, and chemical abuse are all higher than state averages.
At United Way, we believe that by investing in programs and services that build stronger, healthier and more financially stable individuals and families, we can create a better life for everyone in our community.
We invite you to be a part of our vision for the Itasca area.
